High cholesterol is a growing problem in this country.  In response, there is a growing number of statin drugs to lower bad cholesterol and raise good cholesterol.  Crestor is one of the medications.  It was approved by the FDA in 2003 and has received wide acceptance by physicians and the general public.  The manufacturer of Crestor is the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.  Other benefits from the drug have been discovered since its inception, including reducing the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other vascular complications.  Crestor is best used in conjunction with a low-fat diet and exercise.

Risks and Symptoms of Crestor

Just two years after its introduction to the American market, indications of serious muscular problems began to surface among those taking Crestor and other statins.  As a result, the FDA ordered a revision of the warnings on the package, alerting people to the fact that high doses may have serious consequences resulting in the disease rhabdomyolysis.  It is a but serious rare muscular disease in which the victim’s muscles decay and flow into the blood stream, often resulting in kidney damage or failure, and possibly even death.  There are other side effects of Crestor, many of which are not as serious as rhabdomyolysis:

  • Hepatitis and jaundice
  • Sinusitis, cough, pneumonia, and asthma
  • Headache, dizziness, insomnia, vertigo, and neuralgia
  • Depression and anxiety, as well as a decrease in libido
  • Diarrhea, nausea, constipation, vomiting, periodontal abscess, and gastritis
  • Flu-like symptoms, urinary tract infections, chest pain, pelvic pain, and neck pain
  • Diabetes
  • Anemia
  • Rash and pruritus

Reports show that Crestor may have drug conflicts when the patient is already taking cyclosporine, warfarin, Lopid, steroidal hormone decreasing drugs such as Nizoral, Aldactone, and Tagamet, and Maalox,

Others who should talk with their doctors before taking Crestor include pregnant mothers or those who are planning to become pregnant, breast-feeding mothers, or those with liver problems, kidney problems, or an addiction to alcohol.

Crestor Claims and Lawsuits

Many of those suffering side effects from taking Crestor have filed lawsuits to recover compensation and damages for their suffering and medical expenses.  In addition, a large group of victims have filed a class action lawsuit to recover a large, lump-sum settlement for their injuries.

Legal Help from a Lawyer

It is the manufacturer’s obligation to make medications safe and successful for the patients who need them.  If they fail to do so, the patient has the right to consult a product liability lawyer to assess their case and possibly file a personal liability claim.  In the worst-case scenario, the surviving family members of those who have died as a result of the side effects of Crestor have the right to file a claim for damages.  There are many avenues to pursue in order to recover damages and expenses for these kinds of injuries.  However, generally, a skilled attorney is the best hope for individuals to pursue their case to a successful end.
