Pondimin

Pondimin, otherwise known as fenfluramine, is one-half of the common prescription medication known as “Fen Phen”. For years, this drug was used in the creation of appetite suppression medications for treatment of obesity and other dietary issues. More recently, widespread use of the drug has led some patients to take this medication in a long-term type pattern, which is not the recommended usage. In response to this overuse, some patients have developed potentially life-threatening conditions of the heart, which are most commonly associated with heart valve diseases. These reports have been substantiated by the Mayo Clinic, and the FDA has recommended immediately ceasing intake of this drug.

Fast Facts

  • Pondimin has been removed from the United States pharmaceutical market in light of the widespread and lethal complications associated with the drug.
  • Other countries still offer the drug for sale, which has led some American consumers to erroneously believe the drug is relatively safe and legal for consumption.
