Osteoporosis, or the weakening of the bones, primarily in postmenopausal women, is a dangerous condition that can lead to weak bones and bone fractures in both men and women.  Osteoporosis seemed to be solved with the FDA approval in 1999 of Fosamax.  Produced by Merck & Company, Inc., this bisphosphonate drug has been used by many thousands of people to great success as it blocks bone resorption and promotes natural bone development when taken in tandem with vitamin D and calcium.

Risks and Symptoms of Fosamax

As welcome as Fosamax has been to many osteoporosis sufferers, too many others have found it to be a nightmare, suffering serious side effects that could lead to loss of jaw function, pain, tooth loss, exposed bone, and disfigurement.  The condition is called Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ), and is considered by many to be a serious consequence of taking Fosamax.  Also known as “jaw death,” ONJ has been reported primarily in cancer patients taking Fosamax intravenously.

Other side effects of Fosamax include a number of conditions, such as:

  • Muscle pain
  • Esophageal irritation or pain, hoarseness, swelling of face, eyes, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Mouth sores or pain the mouth
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Eye pain
  • Difficulty and painful breathing or swallowing
  • Hives or itching
  • Stomach upset or vomiting, including bloody vomit, or vomit resembling coffee grounds
  • Black, tarry, bloody stools
  • Chest pain
  • Heartburn

Some of these side effects may appear during initial periods of treatment, but disappear over time.  In addition, it has been determined that interactions between Fosamax and certain other drugs may be dangerous:

  • Antacids
  • NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and naproxen
  • Calcium, potassium, or iron supplements
  • Doxycycline
  • Quinidine
  • Tetracycline

Fosamax Claims and Lawsuits

As a result of these serious side effects, there have been at Fosamax lawsuits filed against the manufacturer, Merck & Co.  And while this is a small beginning, it is estimated that many hundreds of cases will follow.  Several class action lawsuits have already been filed, as well.  And there are many law firms that are anxious to help establish others if there are as many cases as they anticipate.

Legal Help from a Lawyer

Legislators have required all manufacturers, particularly those in drug production, to make their products safe for all consumers.  They are also required to label their products with warnings that truthfully present the dangers consumers may face.  When those warnings are not accurate, the manufacturer can be held liable for the pain and suffering their products are found to produce.  Anyone who believes they are suffering from side effects of Fosamax should contact a personal injury lawyer as soon as possible to explore their options.  However, they must do so before their state statute of limitations runs out on such cases or possibly lose the opportunity to file such suits at all.
