Those suffering from depression can find that it is a debilitating and life-altering experience. Yet it can be difficult to find a medication to help, with patients often having to try four or five different types before experiencing relief, while some cannot do so at all.

That is why it is so tragic when a drug is approved, used, and found helpful by some patients, but later shows significant problems.  That may be the case with an anti-depressant known as Celexa.  known as citalopram that is produced by Forest Laboratories.  It is part of a group of drugs known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), and is also marketed under the names Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft, Luvox, Celexa, and Lexapro.  It was approved by the FDA for use in adults, but was subsequently used widely for children without specific FDA approval.

Risks and Symptoms of Celexa

Over time, a number of risks have appeared.  Some are common side effects of many drugs, including

  • Dry mouth
  • Nausea
  • Sleepiness

However, more serious conditions have arisen, leading the FDA to require put warning labels on the packaging and to issue alerts.  Some of the more serious side effects include the following:

  • Increase in suicidal thoughts or behaviors
  • Bleeding
  • Mania  or seizures (especially when taken in close proximity to an MAOI)
  • Persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), considered a risk of serious illness or even death for babies born to mothers who have taken Celexa late in pregnancy, with symptoms including difficulty in breathing, heart murmurs, and rapid heart rates.
  • Sexual problems

Celexa Lawsuits

The claims against the manufacturers of all types of SSRIs have been ongoing, with those against Paxil receiving the most media attention.  Because many doctors responded to the marketing and advertising for Celexa, the drug was heavily prescribed for both adults and children.  As a result of the complaints, and the fact that government healthcare plans such as Medicare and Medicaid paid for many of those prescriptions, the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against Forest Laboratories in early 2009 for fraud in marketing Celexa for children.  They are also investigating Forest Laboratories for alleged bribes and kickbacks.  In addition, there is currently Multi-District Litigation pending in the Eastern District Court of Missouri which includes forty-three cases in relation to suicidal injuries alleged to have been caused by Celexa or Lexapro.

For Those Who Have Been Injured

Anyone who is facing health consequences, or who has a child facing health consequences, over the use of Celexa should contact a product liability lawyer immediately.  There are many options open to them if they have been injured by the inappropriate marketing and distribution of these drugs with which an attorney can acquaint them.  These are complex cases, and there are statutes of limitations on such claims, so it is important to contact an attorney quickly so as to obtain representation and insure that every victim’s rights are protected.
