The drug company Pfizer faced products liability claims in recent years due to alleged injuries and/or side effects resulting from consumers who took Neurontin, a Parke Davis drug that Pfizer took ownership of along with its acquisition of Parke Davis in 2000. Neurontin was purportedly developed to treat epileptic seizures, but it was estimated that the drug was prescribed by physicians to treat conditions other than epilepsy in almost 80% of the cases in which it was prescribed, including attention deficit disorder and bipolar disorder. This became a very high-profile case after a year-long investigation by Dateline, as well as federal and state prosecutors who claimed that Parke Davis had paid illegal kickbacks to doctors who prescribed Neurontin to patients, as part of a marketing scheme to promote the drug for off-label condition usage. About 1,200 Neurontin products liability cases are currently pending in various courts, and the first of these cases is now set to go trial. The primary allegation in these cases is that Neurontin caused suicidal tendencies in patients who were prescribed the drug for off-label medical conditions.
