Rezulin

Rezulin, which has been marketed under the names Resulin and Romozin as well, is a drug used in the treatment of inflammation and as an anti-diabetic. The drug was initially developed in Japan under the name Troglitazone, however, the Parke-Davis company began marketing the drug in the United States as Rezulin in the 1990’s until the drug was shown to essentially create drug-induced hepatitis in patients. At one point, the FDA’s chief medical officer noted the huge increased risks for liver toxicity due to the drug, but was silenced and fired amid pressure from companies. In March of 2000, however, the drug Rezulin was officially taken off the U.S. market.

Fast Facts

  • The British medical authority had removed Rezulin from their markets nearly two years ahead of the United States.
  • Rezulin has since been the subject of numerous class and individual lawsuits against the FDA, as well as the Parke-Davis company.
