Redux

Redux, which is known also as Dexfenfluramine, has been removed from the United States drug markets since 1997. The removal of Redux from American drug markets was in response to notable risks the drug posed to patients, including gravely increased risk of heart problems. Initially, the drug was intended to be used as a commercial weight loss drug, and was at one point approved by the FDA. A very similar drug, known as Fen Phen, also was noted to cause increased hypertension and heart valve problems, and since these indications, the companies behind both Redux and Fen-phen paid out in excess of $13 billion in damage awards to harmed patients or their surviving loved ones.

Fast Facts

  • Redux, although similar in use as Fen-phen, used only half of the drug ingredients used in Fen-phen.
  • Similar drugs to Redux, such as Fen-phen and Aminorex, have also been removed from the American markets by the FDA.
