Prozac Medicine

Prozac is a medicine that is typically prescribed by doctors to treat depression, as well as other mental disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, bulimia nervosa, and panic disorder. A member of the group of anti-depressants known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Prozac was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1987. In 2006, however, the FDA announced two different safety alerts resulting from taking Prozac. First, the FDA warned that consumers using Prozac in conjunction with certain migraine medications, commonly known as triptans, were prone to developing serotonin syndrome, which is potentially life-threatening. Second, the FDA issued a warning that pregnant women who took Prozac medicine or other antidepressant medications placed their babies at a higher risk of being born with a serious medical condition called persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN), which causes abnormal blood flow and a lack of oxygen that can lead to severe illness and/or death.
