Protection Of Consumers

Protection of consumers in the United States comes from various sources in the law, and a number of federal and state government agencies, depending on the type of product involved, and the jurisdiction in which the product is designed, manufactured, sold, and/or otherwise distributed. There are some specific laws, on both the state and federal level, which directly address certain types of products, as well as specific agencies at all levels of government that enforce those laws. A good example is the case of prescription drugs. There are specific federal regulations and standards that address the safety aspects of prescription drugs. Furthermore, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, as well as the Bureau of Consumer Protection of the Federal Trade Commission, in some circumstances, might be involved in the regulation of safety standards for prescription drugs. Moreover, on a more local level, a particular state's attorney general's office, or an equivalent state agency dealing with consumer protection, might be involved in the regulation and monitoring of prescription drugs within the state, as well.
