International Consumer Protection

With international trade and markets becoming more prevalent in this global age, consumers are increasingly confronted with questions of liability when they are injured or experience harm as a result of products that originated in another country. Under most state and federal consumer protection laws, however, even an international company submits itself to the jurisdiction of the appropriate American court if the product is sold in the United States, or otherwise distributed or partially manufactured in the United States. In these cases, then, a products liability claim would proceed just as it would as against a domestic company. In other cases, however, where the product was entirely manufactured and sold in another country, there are some international consumer protection agencies that may be of assistance. For instance, the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network is an organization that is composed of the trade practices enforcement officials of over three dozen countries.
