FTC Consumer Protection

The Bureau of Consumer Protection is a division of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission ("FTC"), a federal government agency that works to prevent unfair and/or deceptive practices in the marketplace. Among the FTC consumer protection laws that the agency works to monitor, regulate, and enforce are laws related to the federal "Do Not Call" list, which prevents unwanted telemarketing calls to consumers, warranties for the merchantability and fitness of certain consumer products, and information on the energy savings costs on new appliances. The FTC takes an active role in consumer protection legislation, regulation, and administration, in that it hears complaints from consumers, enacts rules to help regulate different industries in terms of consumer protections, and even sues companies who have engaged in unfair and/or deceptive business practices. Furthermore, the FTC cooperates with law enforcement agencies nationwide in order to prosecute violators of consumer protection laws, where appropriate, and educates consumers about consumer protection laws and their rights under these laws.
