Fosamax

Fosamax is a prescription medication, taken weekly, to prevent further deterioration of bones, due to osteoporosis. Coupled with daily calcium supplements and exercise, one small little pill, 4 times a month, is supposed to prevent hip and spinal fractures. Unfortunately, it is not without risk. Fosamax has been linked to a disease called osteonecrosis, which is basically loss of jaw bone and functionality. The side effects of Fosamax can range from heartburn to bloody stools or vomiting. To prevent some of the adverse reactions, patients are instructed to sit or stand for at least 30 minutes to a half hour after taking the medication, to insure that it is safely in the digestive tract. Doctors generally believe that the benefits far outweigh the risks associated with Fosamax.
