Fluvoxamine is a generic prescription medication that is commonly used to treat obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The drug falls within the class of medications known as Serotonin Selective Reuptake Inhiibitors, or SSRIs, all of which the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert about in 2006 regarding the increased risk of developing a potentially fatal medical condition known as Serotonin Syndrome when SSRIs are taken in conjunction with triptans, or medications used to treat migraine headaches. Additionally, the FDA also issued a warning in 2006 to pregnant women taking antidepressants about the potential for their babies to be born with persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN). PPHN causes abnormal blood flow in the hearts and lungs of newborns, which causes a lack of oxygen to their bodies. Newborns can become seriously ill and even die as a result of developing PPHN. Finally, there are some studies that taking fluvoxamine can increase the risk of having suicidal behaviors and thoughts. As a result of these serious medical side effects of taking the fluvoxamine drug, the FDA has continued its studies regarding fluvoxamine and other SSRIs, and some lawsuits have ensued.
