Federal Consumer Credit Protection Act

The federal Consumer Credit Protection Act is a law that is designed to protect consumers in a number of areas related to consumer credit. For instance, the U.S. Department of Labor, Wage and Hour Division, monitors and enforces employers' compliance with the terms of the Consumer Credit Protection Act relating to wage garnishments. Under these provisions of the Act, an employee cannot be disciplined or discharged from his job simply because he or she has a wage garnishment in place. Likewise, an employer must honor wage garnishments, but is limited to the amount of deductions that can be made from an employee's paycheck in any particular week or pay period. The Consumer Credit Protection Act also contains the Truth-in-Lending Act, which requires that lenders make certain disclosures to consumers before they take out a loan. Additionally, the Consumer Credit Protection Act established the Fair Credit Reporting Act, which mandates the reporting of accurate credit information to consumer credit reporting agencies.
