Federal Consumer Credit Protection

There are a number of federal consumer credit protection laws that provide certain rights for consumers in terms of their credit. For instance, the Consumer Credit Protection Act prohibits employers from firing or discharging employees who are subject to wage garnishments. Likewise, employees can only have certain amounts of wage garnishments deducted from their paychecks on a weekly basis. Pursuant to the Consumer Credit Protection Act, certain truth in lending disclosures are required to be provided to consumers who are taking out loans, so that they are fully aware of the obligations that they are taking on when they borrow money. On the other hand, the Fair Credit Reporting Act requires that only correct information about consumers be provided on their credit reports, and that a mechanism be available for consumers to correct information on their credit reports. Furthermore, the Equal Credit Opportunity Act requires that the same level of credit be made available to consumers, despite their age, sex, race, marital status, and some other characteristics.
