Ephedra

Ephedra is a drug used in many diet supplements. It is supposed to reduce a person's appetite so weight loss attempts are more successful. Unfortunately, the side effects have been linked to deaths. Ephedra also increases heart rate. As a result, people using diet supplements containing the drug have often suffered heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and sudden death because the blood vessels constrict. Some companies even concealed the health risks by touting how their supplement is all-natural, when chemical additives are actually present. In February, 2004, the FDA actually banned the use of Ephedra, because the health risks are far greater than the potential benefits. In fact, law suits have been filed and won based on disability or death caused by this dangerous drug. Companies are now required by law to be forthcoming with all ingredients, including potential adverse side effects.
