Many different types of consumer protection legislation exist in the United States today, with the vast majority occurring at the state level, contrary to other industrialized nations, which tend to use uniform, nationwide consumer protection and/or products liability laws. Typically, these laws are designed to protect consumers from the risks of dangers from different types of products, and to prevent product manufacturers from distributing misleading or untruthful information about their products, or from hiding and/or omitting necessary information about their products. Consumer protection legislation affects many different areas of commerce, but tends to be geared toward products that relate to health and safety. Common products that are regulated by consumer protection legislation include medications and items used by infants and children, such as cribs, toys, and mattresses. In the United States, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration administers regulations regarding medications, and the U.S. Consumer Protection Agency monitors and regulates other types of products.
