Consumer Protection Legal

Both the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission ("CPSC") and the Bureau of Consumer Protection of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission provide some consumer protection legal advice and enforcement of consumer protection laws. While the Bureau of Consumer Protection primarily deals with products in terms of trade regulations, the CPSC deals with reports and complaints about particular consumer products being defective or injuring people. The CPSC does not represent individual plaintiffs or parties who have been injured by allegedly defective products; these sorts of claims are left to private attorneys who typically specialize in the area of products liability law. However, the CPSC can provide consumers in general with large-scale relief, such as requiring that companies or manufacturers provide certain warning labels on products, issuing consumer alerts about potentially dangerous or defective products, and/or even pressuring or forcing a company or manufacturer to take a certain dangerous product off the market altogether.
