Consumer Credit Protection Act

The Consumer Credit Protection Act has been put in place to put a limit on the amount a person's paycheck can be garnished, in the event of a lawsuit judgment against him/her. The most common is probably related to child support, but it can also apply to an individual who has been sued for wrongful injury or death. In addition, an employer cannot fire a worker simply because his/her paycheck is being garnished to satisfy a judgment. A boss cannot demote anyone or treat him or her any differently because of an unrelated lawsuit. As long as a worker performs his/her duty, a boss cannot punish that person further.
