Alosetron

Lotronex, which the trade name of the drug alosetron, is a drug marketed by Prometheus Laboratories in San Diego that is used mainly in the treatment of IBS, or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, in females. Lotronex, then under the name Alosetron, was initially removed from the United States pharmaceutical markets in 2000 as the result of numerous complaints of potentially fatal gastrointestinal complications. However, in 2002, the FDA reversed their initial assessment of the drug, and in turn, Lotronex was allowed back onto the U.S. markets under some safety restrictions. Since then, the drug has remained on the market, while still causing known conditions, such as secondary colonic ischemia, obstruction, perforation, and ischaemic colitis.
