Iovate Health Sciences Inc. is the manufacturer of the drug hydroxycut. Hydroxycut is said to increase the metabolism of its users while reducing the user’s hunger cravings while taking the drug. Close to one million units of Hydroxycut are sold each year, making it the top selling product in the weight loss market in the United States. It is estimated that 15 percent of United States citizens uses dietary supplements to aid in the loss of weight. The manufacturer of Hydroxycut has recalled the drug since there has been a report of at least one death, reports of liver damage, and reports of rhabdomyolysis. The United States Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to the general public on May 1, 2009 regarding the use of Hydroxycut. Hydroxycut is sold without a prescription on the Internet, through magazines, on television and at conventional retail stores throughout the country.

The Drugs in Hydroxycut

Hydroxycut was originally sold with the drug ephedra in it, which has been known to cause severe side effects such as liver damage, heart problems, and in some cases death. There are versions of Hydroxycut that are sold without ephedra in them today. Those versions of Hydroxycut include:

  • Caffeine-Free Hydroxycut – similar to regular Hydroxycut but designed for caffeine-sensitive people.
  • Hydroxycut 24 - an around-the-clock type of weight-loss product that includes regular Hydroxycut for the daytime and the caffeine-free for the evening.
  • Hydroxycut Hardcore – a weight-loss supplement for bodybuilders or other sportspersons.
  • Hydroxycut Max! – A weight-loss supplement for female fitness competitors or other sportswomen.

Affects of Hydroxycut on Consumers

There have been at least 23 incidents reported to the Food and Drug Administration regarding the use of the drug Hydroxycut. These 23 incidents have included serious liver problems in which some cases have ended with a liver transplant. One of the incidents ended in death for one of the users of the drug. The liver injuries reported by victims of the drug occurred after using the drug at the required dosage listed on the bottle. Symptoms of liver injuries include the following:

  • Jaundice, which is the yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Light colored stools
  • Excessive fatigue
  • Weakness
  • Stomach or abdominal pain
  • Itching
  • Loss of appetite

There have been other medical issues reported to the Food and Drug Administration caused by the use of the drug Hydroxycut. Those other issues include seizures, cardiovascular disorders, and rhabdomoylysis. Rhabdomoylysis is a type of muscle damage that can lead to kidney failure and other serious health problems.

Removing Hydroxycut from the Medicine Cabinet
