Hydroxycut Dangers and FDA Recall
The dangers of the drug Hydroxycut, used by United States citizens to lose weight by quelling hunger cravings, are numerous and have caused one death. The Food and Drug Administration has issued a warning about the side effects of the drug and it has since been recalled by its manufacturer, Iovate Health Sciences Inc. The warning was issued on May 1, 2009 by the FDA because Hydroxycut has been found to cause serious liver damage to the point of victims of the drug needing liver transplants. Other serious side effects of the drug include rhabdomyolysis, which causes serious health problems such as kidney failure, and cardiovascular disease.
Nature of Risk of Hydroxycut
It has been determined that Hydroxycut was falsely advertised on television and in other media outlets, leading to numerous lawsuits against the drug’s manufacturer. In 2003, Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon filed a lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturer. The lawsuit claimed the following:
"The product is not "clinically proven" to be a "fat-burner," as MuscleTech claims. MuscleTech's own study showed that Hydroxycut has no efficacy as compared to placebo with the possible exception of an appetite-suppressing effect. Moreover, the serious adverse health risks of Hydroxycut with ephedra – including death – were not adequately described or disclosed in marketing and labeling of the product."
The risk of using Hydroxycut includes developing major medical problems such as kidney failure, liver damage to the point of needing a liver transplant, cardiovascular disease, excessive fatigue and other medical problems.
