ADCO USA Has Recalled Dried Octopus

(SafetyAlerts) -The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said that ADCO USA Inc. has recalled 6 oz. packages of Dried Octopus, Product of Japan, because they contain undeclared sulfites. People who have allergies to sulfite run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled "Dried Octopus" was distributed nationwide in retail stores.

The product comes in a 6 ounce clear plastic package marked Dried Octopus, Product of Japan, with UPC number 785165101916.

No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the sulfite-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of sulfites. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a mislabeling of the product.

Sale of the product has been suspended until FDA and the company are certain that the problem has been corrected.

Consumers who have purchased the affected 6 ounce packages of "Dried Octopus" are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 718-963-1010.

Who Governs Dangerous Products?

While there is no one government entity governing all dangerous or defective products, there are some specialized agencies that are enacted to protect consumers from certain types of products.

Two examples are the FDA and the DOT. The FDA enacts laws and manufacturing process to protect consumers from food borne and drug related illnesses. The DOT is responsible for laws that protect consumers while traveling, and includes the FAA, NHTSA and FHA among others.
